Northbrook ~ Rethinking What a Townhome Can Be
For more than two decades, Blenheim Homes has been building remarkable upscale residences. Since architectural distinction is one of the company’s hallmarks, it’s no coincidence that Blenheim homes and communities have garnered many highly coveted awards from the industry, including “Community of the Year” nine times.
Northbrook may someday be a candidate for this honor in its own right. In the meantime, the residents will enjoy some of the most distinctive architectural design to be seen anywhere in the northern Delaware/southeastern Pennsylvania area.
Located off Foulk Road just across the Delaware/Pennsylvania state line, the community is equally convenient for those who commute to work in New Castle County or the Philadelphia area.
Eventually, Northbrook will include a total of 199 homes, on a heavily wooded, hilly site. As in all Blenheim communities, protected open space will be abundant –– more than 30 acres, which will include a half-mile nature trail. Community recreation facilities will include tot lots, picnic and exercise areas and an athletic field. Complementing these residents-only facilities is 170-acre Clayton Park. Located just across the Northbrook access road, it includes a public golf course.
The vast majority of the residences will be upscale townhomes; in fact, Northbrook will offer just 15 traditional single-family homes. The rest, 184 in total, are luxury townhomes.
These are hardly your traditional townhomes, however. In fact, they redefine the category. When was the last time you were in a townhome featuring a ceiling soaring 20 feet or so? Or, depending on the style, a townhome that seems to be three stories tall from the street, but just two from the rear? Or vice versa?
Distinctive styles are offered, each with a choice of three facades. Beyond that, prospective buyers can only be warned that selecting among them will be difficult.
Featuring widths of 30 or 32 feet, and depths that vary from 38 to 52 feet, the floorplans offer an amazing amount of living space. With more than 2,000 square feet, the smallest of the designs offers more space than many single-family homes, while the most spacious features more than 2,500 square feet. Finishing the standard basement areas in any of the designs will add substantially to the usable space.
The Belmont appears to be a two-story design from the front, but a trip to the back yard reveals three levels. It comes with a choice of a one- or two-car garage; if you opt for a single-car style, you’ll also get a study/home office. The huge kitchen is open to a greatroom, which can be divided from the formal dining area by an optional gas fireplace.
The Charleston looks to be a two-story plan from the street, but it too features three levels, with a standard two-car garage. Alternative layouts include a plan featuring a first-floor owners’ suite. But the most notable feature is the soaring ceiling in the family room –– a dramatic space that will make first-time visitors rethink every notion they’ve had about what a townhome can be.
